“The Darkness Before the Light” & “LIFE and Its Expectations”

Author: Sia Shah, ESMol

Following the theme of life’s struggles, these two poems, read together, create a reflection: the poet exposes the moral of the story, when the story is that of your own life. The artwork contains an important message of encouragement, of hope and of inner strength; it proposes an new way to frame hardship with optimism.

The Darkness Before the Light

The darkest of days
That comes with the wind
Mixes with frustration
And becomes your reason of disappointment

It has the term of “bad times”
A barrier to the path of joy
Test your hunger, test your determination
Test your capability to go through failure

That moment can create a regret or a lesson
Give birth to new energies inside you
You might even feel given up
But that makes you want to rise up eagerly

You may even feel like a loser
Not knowing what to do next
But a true winner is
Who learns from mistakes

Failures teach you to be stronger
Give experience and learning
Life does not go easy on anyone
It’s how you face it that counts

Never let blunders lead to self-destruction
People will gossip and comment
The day you take it to mind, it’s over
People start having control over your life

Prove who you are by actions not words
Do it and show the world the real you
Action has more power than words
Rectification will bring you honour

This poetry enlightens the fact that no matter how deep you fall, how deep you’re wounded, it’s only you who can rise back up. Life is not a picnic, one must work hard to fulfil their dreams and achieve successful results. Hard times come and go; optimism should always be there. As we say, “you cannot see the light until you’ve been through the darkness”, so instead of cursing darkness, face it your own way, which could lead you to a path you’ve always been yearning for.

LIFE and Its Expectations

A tiny little you
Looking to something new
Preparing for a journey
Which is unknown to you

Enjoying childhood, relaxed and innocent
Time flies and before you know
You’re finally a teen
Growing intellectually and physically

Discovering things you have never seen,
Expressing emotions you’ve never known,
Dealing with friendships, exploring love,
Witnessing life with a different perspective

Life is no less than adventure
Every step you take, every decision you make
Sometimes confused, at times dejected
Filled with moments of anger and some of care

Living the best life you can
Not knowing what life throws at you next
Determined and fierce
No matter what obstacle overcomes

Finally an adult
Trying to make something of yourself
Studying, setting goals,
Making your career

Burdened with responsibilities
Though, you don’t stop
You do your best to make things work
Even at your hardest times

Time to think about your personal life
Marry your love and have a family together
No doubt that responsibilities add up
Best part is to have your loved ones beside you

Every stage of life has a meaning
Every stage comes with new obstacles
New challenges to face, new dreams to race
So buckle up and get ready for the ride

Life is a cycle that comes with plenty of phases, and those phases are outlined by age. The term “age” is there for a reason, each age comes with new experiences, new exposures and plenty of knowledge. Life is a rollercoaster; you’ve got to keep up with the ups and downs and come out of it using your skills. So get it together and prepare yourself for this very amusing ride called “life”.
